I want to be a Gazelle....
So last night I finally finished reading Gilbert Tuhabonye's book, This Voice in My Heart. Wow, it's such an amazing story. While reading it I had to keep reminding myself that it was a true story, and he actually endured everything he described in the book. For those that don't know, Gilbert is from a small country in Africa, Burundi. In 1993, the tension between the Hutus and the Tutsis finally erupted and the Headmaster at Gilbert's school (a Hutu) mastered a plan to kill all of the Tutsis at the school. Gilbert was the only one to survive the attack, and since that day he has been able to heal and resume his running career. He now lives in Austin, TX (see I knew all of the cool people were in Austin) and coaches a running program called Gilbert's Gazelles. This book tells a great story of someone who has been able to endure so much hatred but come out of it so positively. Gilbert has a very descriptive writing style and tells everything exactly as it happened. He does not try to paint himself as someone who deserved to be saved, or was better than those around him. Instead he points out the flaws in his life, and discusses how terrible he felt about the things he had to do to save himself. He describes in the book that he did not take a "Why me?" attitude after the attack, but rather saw it as a sign that there were other plans for him and he made changes in his life to make sure he lived up to those plans. If you are looking for some inspiration, or just want a good read, be sure to pick up this book. It's even on sale at Amazon.com for $7!
